How much carbon did I produce today?

Until I can get it together to do something more interesting, here's a thought:

Any activity that burns fossil fuel produces carbon, in surprising quantities. Burning a single gallon of gasoline, for example, releases five pounds of carbon--the equivalent of a small bag of charcoal briquettes.

Now, I'm no scientist, but I think I read somewhere that carbon is the building block of life. Thus, could it not be said that by burning fossil fuels one is pro-life?
